We recognize it when we see it in flowers, butterflies, architecture and in works of art. It can be described as a sense of balance and is a powerful concept related to geometry, spatial reasoning and elements of visual art. Should symmetry be taught in math class or in art class? In this collaborative presentation, participants will hear from a mathematician and an artist who set on the journey of collaboratively teaching math in an art class at a local high school. They will share the process of looking at research, the lessons on symmetry they created together, examples of students’ work, and their passion for seeing this type of intentional collaboration grow throughout the central valley and beyond. ABOUT THE PRESENTER Leslie Batty Leslie Batty is a successful and well-known local artist. She has a masters of Art from Fresno State University and an art studio located near downtown. Her work explores ideas of feminine identity construction within contemporary western society through the metaphorical lens of sewing and act of dress. While continuing her art career, Leslie is also a high school visual art teacher who believes in the importance of giving back to the community she loves.
