Mathematics is Moving!

1:15pm-2:00pm

Kids love to move around! What if we could invite mathematics into that movement and make it a playful learning experience? Come explore ways to integrate movement with counting, patterns, computational thinking, and spatial communication. We will share playful activities that can be adapted to a variety of developmental levels and learning environments.

Weaving New Ideas in Early Mathematics

12:35pm-1:15pm

Description: Throughout history, societies have provided space for community and cultural making, whether through weaving container baskets, colorful blankets, or storytelling tapestries. Weaving is also a wonderfully mathematical way to create repeating patterns often found in art while using common, accessible materials. Friedrich Froebel, a conceptual founder of the Kindergarten, considered paper weaving a natural occupation for children to develop problem-solving, perseverance, creativity, and imagination. Join us for a whole group hands-on activity to explore the many ways young children experience mathematical ideas through paper weaving.

Materials needed: paper (assortment of colors), scissors, rulers, pencil/pen

Speakers: Steve Pauls, Ph.D., Scott Nielsen, Aileen Rizo
